Hello! My name is Ceylin and I’m from Turkey. I am currently a second-year student in the bachelor’s degree program, Business and Economics (CLABE). Travelling, and exploring new places and cultures, has always been something I enjoyed! During my high school years, I decided that I wanted to study abroad. After applying to various universities in various countries, I decided that Italy was the best option for me, specifically, Bologna.
Italian universities boast a rich history and an esteemed reputation in various fields, from arts and humanities to engineering and sciences. I can also say that the history, art, language, cuisine and culture of Italy played a significant role in shaping my decision.
Among the Italian universities, the University of Bologna stood out for its great history as the oldest university in the Western world and its commitment to academic excellence. I had already decided that I wanted to study in a field related to economics. In particular, CLABE stood out to me during my research for the degree programmes. It is the perfect choice as it allows me to focus both on business and economics, which is quite a unique opportunity. Our study programme is designed to develop solid skills in economic fields, studying the foundations of economic processes inside and outside the company, business management, quantitative economics and law, as well as skills in marketing and financial, strategic and organisational business management.
After taking the SAT and preparing my documentation, I embarked on the application and enrolment process. The university and the exam system here are quite different from what I was used to, but it has been an excellent opportunity for me to learn and grow! The fact that students have multiple chances per year to sit an exam is a great advantage. The system was thoroughly explained during the Welcome Day and in classes. Additionally, the degree program's website is an excellent resource for students to get information when they need it.
I have always wanted to experience living in Italy from the first time I visited it, and now I'm living my dream! Therefore, I can say that arriving in Bologna was a nostalgic experience. I would have never imagined moving to the city I visited years ago. I just know that my past self would have been so proud to see where I have gotten today. Getting used to life in Bologna wasn’t so difficult since the city is full of students, different cultures, and life.
Another great aspect of studying at the University of Bologna is the regional scholarship, ER.GO, which is awarded to students on both economic and merit conditions. The fact that this scholarship is also offered to international students is an amazing opportunity. The scholarship may include a tuition fee exemption and a contribution according to your eligibility. The application process usually goes from the beginning of July until the end of August, and it is possible to find most of the information you need from the guide to application that is announced each year.
We can all agree that finding accommodation in Bologna is not the easiest, so I would suggest starting your research early. Some of the preferred accommodation options include student accommodations, shared or private rooms, and apartments.
I would say that Bologna is one of the most liveable cities in Italy. It is very easy to get around. I get to class by walking or using public transportation. It’s possible to get to pretty much everywhere by public transportation and since the city centre is not so big, it is walkable which I think is amazing. The architecture and the history of the city are truly mesmerising. There is no better feeling than to walk to class passing by pretty buildings and streets.
The city is full of life, especially during the weekend, and there are many things to do during your free time. This may include exploring museums, taking a walk in the city centre, shopping, trying new cafes and restaurants or spending time with your friends. Thanks to Bologna’s position, it is also easy to explore other cities. A weekend trip with friends is something I always look forward to!
Studying abroad has its challenges. However, I think that it is something everyone should experience once in their lifetime. Studying at the University of Bologna has given me the opportunity to gain a global perspective and network while working on my language skills. I am proud to be part of a diverse environment and to have access to great academics for students interested in pursuing their passions and career goals.
Experiencing the student life
Getting to be surrounded by the poetic Italian language, making new international friends, and learning something new each day has given me new insights that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to gain any other way. The city of Bologna is a fantastic place to experience student life, with its beautiful libraries, study rooms, and faculties located all over the city centre. I enjoyed every aspect of my student life there! From getting croissants and cappuccinos to studying in peaceful libraries, and of course, trying delicious pizza, pasta, and gelato. Walking on the charming streets of Bologna is the perfect way to relax after a long day of studying! I hope that my experiences and insights have given you a glimpse into what it's like to study at the University of Bologna.
